Oh what a fabulous garden. You have lots of space but plants do get rampant quickly. I love the film Love and Mercy too, such great acting. Have you read Seamus Heaney's poem Digging? One of my favourites as the poet compares his father's digging work in the fields to himself as a writer digging into the page? Both creative endeavors.
Thank you, Lucy! Yes, the plants that like to grow really like to grow! I haven’t red that Seamus Heaney poem, but I will do so—thanks for the suggestion!
I am in awe of your gorgeous gardens, Sarah! I can only imagine how much time and tending they all take. And I think you could make your metaphors work for an essay comparing writing to gardening--it would be a great exercise (which you already started). Your entire property is so lovely. Wishing you and the fam a wonderful summer!
Aww, thank you, Brody! Everything is so pretty right now that I had to post about it. And maybe someday I will write that essay… happy summer to you, too! 💕
In his book "How to Write One Song" Jeff Tweedy suggests taking the verbs from one action (gardening, cooking, cutting hair, etc…) and applying them to another. It’s a way to infuse life into our sentences. For example: the bees simmer above the lavender hedge.
Gorgeous, Sarah!
Thanks, Liza! It’s peak flower time in NH.
Your garden is gorgeous! Have you ever read Dominique Browning’s memoir of her garden? Beautiful book. Enjoy the flowers!
Thank you! I think I did read that memoir—was she the editor of House and Garden?

I love this, and will try it. I’ve wondered about his book—his advice makes me want to read it!
It was quick and thoughtful! xN
Thank you for sharing your gardens and your thoughts. Perhaps, the metaphors aren’t working YET. 😊
Gorgeous - and i, too, often think about writing metaphors when I’m among the flowers and weeds and dirt…patience and grit and awe.
