I'm less of a fiction reader these days (just can't find anything I like) but I miss that immersive experience, and I love the sound of Percival Everett's James which I hadn't heard about.
Ah, thanks, Ann! Incidentally, I just read the forthcoming novel ENLIGHTENMENT by Sarah Perry (May pub date in US), which feels like historical fiction even though it's set in 1997. It's kind of a strange book and won't be for everyone, but I love its digressive, omniscient, almost 19th-centuryish narration.
